Biography

Stefania Raimondo, PhD: She graduated in Biology at the University of Turin in 2002, during the thesis activities she started to study peripheral nerve regeneration processes and nerve repair techniques.

During her PhD in Physiology (2003-08) she worked on stem cells with the aim of studying their application on regenerative medicine. After the PhD, she had the opportunity to have research experience abroad at the University of Manchester (2008) and at the University of Bordeaux (2015) continuing her studies both on the peripheral nervous system and stem cells.

She is now Full Professor in Human Anatomy at the Department of Clinical and Biological Sciences (University of Turin).

Since 2019, she is responsible for the Nerve Regeneration Unit at the Neuroscience Institute Cavalieri Ottolenghi (NICO). She is member of the European Society for the Study of Peripheral Nerve Repair and Regeneration (ESPNR) since 2014, General Secretary from 2022 to 2024 and President of the society from 2024.

She is the International Mobility Coordinator at the Department of Clinical and Biological Sciences from 2017.

The main research interests of Stefania Raimondo are related to peripheral nerve regeneration processes and to the assessment of innovative strategies (e.g. tissue engineering, biomaterial scaffolds, nanotechnologies, cell transplantation, growth factors delivery) for repairing damaged somatic and autonomic peripheral nerves.

She is expert in both vitro (neurons, Schwann cells, DRG explants) and in vivo experimental models (rodent). She is the supervisor of several PhD and Master´s degree students. She is the author and co-author of numerous scientific papers and book chapters. She is the principal investigator and the member of national and international scientific projects with competitive funding.
