Biography

Rui Damasio Alvites, DVM, PhD – Junior Researcher at the Center for Animal Science Studies of the Institute of Agricultural and Agri-Food Sciences and Technologies of Porto University (CECA-ICETA-UP), in the Research group of Regenerative Medicine and Experimental Surgery.

External collaborator at Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar (ICBAS) from the University of Porto (UP), at the Laboratory of Veterinary Cell-based Therapies. Invited Assistant Professor at the University Institute of Health Sciences of the Polytechnic and University Higher Education Cooperative (IUCS-CESPU), and an integrated member and representative of the post-doc researchers of the Associate Laboratory for Animal and Veterinary Science (AL4AnimalS).

Member and Secretary of the Board of the European Society for the Study of Peripheral Nerve Repair and Regeneration (ESPNR). PhD in Veterinary Sciences by ICBAS-UP since 2021. Master in Veterinary Medicine from University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD) since 2015. He practiced Veterinary Medicine at the Veterinary Hospital of Porto (HVP), in Clinic and Surgery of Companion Animals. He develops his research in the field the Veterinary Sciences, in the specific field of ​​Regenerative Medicine, in a One Health approach.

His main research focus is the Peripheral Nerve Regeneration, where it has been explored the development of new therapies by combining biomaterials and cell-based therapies and in the establishment and validation of animal models of great complexity. He has also been collaborating with other projects developed within the research group, namely on the fields of bone regeneration, skin regeneration, joint regeneration, genitourinary diseases and ophthalmic diseases.

Author and co-author of various scientific papers, chapters, posters and oral communications, is co-author of two patents, one of them related to the field of peripheral nerve regeneration.

Supervisor and co-supervisor of undergraduate, master’s and PhD students. He was part of the panel of judges for Public Defenses of Bachelors and Master’s Dissertations. Principal and participant researcher in several national and international scientific projects with competitive casting.
