Biography
Jose A Gomez-Sanchez is a Miguel Servet Researcher at ISABIAL (General Hospital Univ. of Alicante Dr. Balmis), where he leads research on demyelinating diseases, peripheral nerve damage, and its relationship with the immune system. His academic journey began with degrees in Biochemistry and Biology (Biotechnology pathway) from the Universidad Miguel Hernández and Universidad de Alicante, respectively, followed by a PhD in Neuroscience from the Universidad Miguel Hernández in 2010.
After completing his PhD, he pursued postdoctoral research at University College London (UCL), focusing on the role of Schwann cells in nerve regeneration and myelination. His work has been instrumental in understanding the biology of Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system (PNS), particularly their role in myelination, nerve regeneration, and ageing.
In 2017, he returned to Spain to continue his independent research at the Instituto de Neurociencias (CSIC-UMH), where he collaborated with experts in PNS pathologies and clinicians. His research focuses on peripheral nerve injuries and the role of Schwann cells in corneal regeneration. Now based at ISABIAL, he has established his research group, Research Group 49: Myelin, Neuroimmunology, and Electron Microscopy, where his team explores demyelinating diseases, peripheral nerve damage, and immune system interactions. Since 2023, he has also been directing the new electron microscopy facility at ISABIAL, which is equipped for volume electron microscopy (Array Tomography) and high-pressure freezing (HPF) sample fixation. He also co-founded the Myelin Alicante Labs hub, focusing on advancing knowledge of how myelin forms and repairs after injury, particularly in neurodegenerative diseases and nerve damage.
